The Place Where Balls Roll Uphill: Our Mystery Spot Family Adventure

Our Long-Awaited Adventure to Santa Cruz’s Mystery Spot

Six years. That’s how long my family had been talking about visiting the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz. Between work schedules, school commitments, and teenage social calendars, something always seemed to come up. But last week, the stars finally aligned—or maybe the gravitational forces did?—and all five of us made it happen.

Into the Forest

The journey to the Mystery Spot begins before you even arrive. As we wound our way through the redwood forest, driving beneath towering trees that made our car look like a toy, I felt that familiar flutter of anticipation. The canopy above us was so dense that sunlight barely penetrated through, creating this cathedral-like atmosphere that immediately set the tone for something out of the ordinary. These coastal redwoods, some of the tallest trees on Earth, have been standing sentinel over this area for centuries, and you feel wonderfully small in their presence.

The parking lot was modest, tucked away in this forested pocket of the Santa Cruz Mountains, but getting there felt majestic. There’s something about being surrounded by nature like that—it reminds you that you’re about to experience something unique.

A Family Moment Worth the Wait

Here’s what made this trip truly special: my entire family was together. My sons, both adults now with jobs and responsibilities of their own, cleared their schedules. My daughter, a high school senior who usually prefers hanging out with friends (as she should!), actually wanted to come along. My husband and I looked at each other in the parking lot with that unspoken acknowledgment—we don’t get these moments as often anymore.

The rain started just as we pulled in, which would normally dampen spirits, but I’d come prepared with an umbrella. The only real disappointment was discovering the snack bar was closed due to the weather. We’d been looking forward to those hot dogs advertised on the website, but the gift shop had some snacks to tide us over.

The Mystery Begins

Discovered in 1939 by surveyor George Prather, the Mystery Spot has been baffling visitors for over 80 years. Prather was laying out a summer camp when his surveying equipment began malfunctioning in this particular 150-foot circular area. Compasses spun wildly, levels refused to level, and something just felt… off.

When our tour time came, we joined a group of about 15 people at the gate. Our guide had a wonderfully dry sense of humor that made the experience even more entertaining. As we walked what appeared to be a moderate incline toward the tilted cabin, I noticed my kids exchanging glances—they were already feeling it.

Defying Explanation

The cabin itself sits at what appears to be an impossible angle, and the courtyard around it seems to tilt in ways that make your brain work overtime trying to make sense of what you’re seeing. Our guide walked us through the history while we stood in this disorienting space, explaining the various theories people have proposed over the decades.

Is it an optical illusion created by the slanted surroundings? Some skeptics think so, pointing to the way our brains use visual cues to determine what’s level. Could it be a magnetic anomaly or gravitational distortion? The compass problems would suggest something unusual is happening. Or perhaps it’s something even stranger—a vortex of some kind? The guide presented all the theories with equal weight, never claiming to know the answer.

Inside the cabin, the sensation intensified. I actually felt a bit nauseated, like there was an invisible force pulling in one direction. My daughter grabbed my arm for balance, and I saw my husband tilting his head, trying to recalibrate. It was genuinely disorienting in a way that’s hard to describe until you experience it.

The props inside were perfect for photos—we took pictures of each other appearing to stand at impossible angles, defying gravity in ways that looked absurd but felt strangely real in the moment. Balls rolled uphill. People seemed to change height depending on where they stood. Water poured at bizarre angles.

Still a Mystery

By the end of the tour, we’d taken dozens of photos and had our minds thoroughly bent, but we weren’t any closer to understanding what causes the Mystery Spot’s strange effects. And honestly? That’s perfect. In a world where we can Google the answer to almost anything, there’s something refreshing about embracing a genuine mystery.

The Mystery Spot sits in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains, an area rich with natural wonders. The nearby redwood groves are part of an ecosystem that has existed for millions of years, and the mountains themselves are part of the Pacific Coast Ranges, formed by the ongoing collision of tectonic plates. Maybe all that geological drama has something to do with it?

What Really Matters

As we drove back down through those magnificent trees, my family chattering about their favorite moments and debating theories, I realized something. Yes, the Mystery Spot was fascinating and fun and wonderfully weird. But the real magic was simpler than any gravitational anomaly: we were all together.

My sons won’t live at home forever. My daughter is already one foot out the door toward her own adventures. These family outings—the ones where everyone actually shows up and wants to be there—are becoming more precious, not less.

If you’re thinking about visiting the Mystery Spot, go. It’s quirky, it’s fun, and it’ll make you question your senses. Bring your family if you can. Take the photos. Buy the bumper sticker. Let yourself be baffled by something that defies easy explanation.

Just maybe check if the snack bar is open first. We’re still thinking about those hot dogs.

Practical Tips:

  • Tours run regularly throughout the day, but booking ahead is recommended
  • The walk involves some uphill terrain and uneven surfaces
  • Bring an umbrella if rain is in the forecast
  • Plan to spend about 45 minutes for the tour
  • The gift shop is worth browsing—lots of fun Mystery Spot memorabilia
  • Give yourself time to explore Santa Cruz afterward—the town, beaches, and Boardwalk are all nearby

Have you visited the Mystery Spot? What’s your theory about what causes the strange phenomena? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
