Where Hollywood Met the Old West: A Love Letter to Sedona’s Cowboy Club

Post 6 of the Explore Sedona Series

If you’re planning a trip to Sedona, Arizona, let me tell you about a place that’s become as essential to our visits as the red rocks themselves. Nestled in the heart of uptown Sedona, the Cowboy Club Grille & Spirits isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a portal to the Wild West, where legends were born over whiskey and steaks, and where history still echoes through original wooden walls.

A Storied Past Worth Savoring

Step through those iconic swinging saloon doors, and you’re walking into a piece of living history. The building opened in 1946 as the Oak Creek Tavern, serving as the social heartbeat of Sedona for decades. But what makes this place truly legendary is who walked through those very same doors.

Picture this: John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, Joan Crawford, Jimmy Stewart, and Maureen O’Hara bellying up to that same wooden bar after long days filming Western classics in Sedona’s stunning red rock country. More than 50 Hollywood films were shot here in the 1950s, and when the cameras stopped rolling, this tavern became the after-hours headquarters for Tinseltown’s finest.

But the Cowboy Club’s most significant moment came on June 23, 1965, when four artists—Joe Beeler, Charlie Dye, John Hampton, and George Phippen—gathered at a corner table by the fireplace and founded the Cowboy Artists of America. That organization would go on to revolutionize Western art and preserve the authenticity of cowboy culture for generations to come. You can still sit near that very fireplace today, where creativity and legacy collided over beers and conversation.

In 1993, the building was lovingly restored and transformed into the Cowboy Club we know today. The pool tables may be gone, but the soul remains—those barnwood walls, the crackling fireplace, and an authenticity you simply can’t manufacture.

High Desert Cuisine That Dares to Be Different

Now, let’s talk about what keeps us coming back again and again: the food. The Cowboy Club specializes in what they call “High Desert Cuisine,” and trust me, it’s unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere. This isn’t your typical steakhouse trying to play cowboy—this is the real deal.

My husband and I never visit Sedona without making at least one pilgrimage here (usually more), and we always start with the cactus fries. These aren’t your garden-variety appetizers. Imagine crispy strips of prickly pear cactus, lightly battered and fried to golden perfection, served with a tangy dipping sauce. They’re earthy, slightly tart, and absolutely addictive. It’s the kind of dish that makes you stop mid-conversation to say, “Have you tried these yet?”

But the crown jewel of their menu—and my personal favorite—is the rattlesnake. I know, I know. But hear me out. Prepared with Southwest flair, this dish is tender, surprisingly delicate, and utterly delicious. It tastes like the desert itself distilled into something extraordinary. Every time we bring family or friends, I insist they try it. Some are skeptical at first, but I’ve yet to meet someone who didn’t finish their plate.

Beyond these signature dishes, the menu showcases award-winning Angus steaks, buffalo, elk, fresh seafood, and game that’s prepared with the kind of attention to detail that’s become their hallmark. Everything is made from scratch in that kitchen, honoring both tradition and innovation.

An Atmosphere You Can Feel in Your Bones

What truly sets the Cowboy Club apart from the dozens of other restaurants in Sedona is the feeling you get when you walk in. The rustic decor isn’t some corporate-designed theme park version of the Old West—it’s authentic down to the last detail. The walls are adorned with works from prominent Cowboy Artists, and hanging proudly above the bar is the second-largest set of longhorn horns in the United States.

Whether you’re dining with your spouse in the more intimate Silver Saddle Room or bringing the whole family into the main dining area, the atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between casual comfort and special occasion. It’s the kind of place where you can wear jeans and boots or dress up a bit—either way, you’ll fit right in.

The staff treats you like family, not just another tourist passing through. Their warmth and genuine hospitality reflect Sedona’s spirit perfectly. And if you’re lucky enough to visit on a night when they have live music, you’re in for an even more memorable experience.

The Perfect Complement to Sedona’s Magic

There’s something about Sedona that defies explanation—the way the painted rocks glow in the sunset, the energy that seems to emanate from the earth itself, those famous vortexes that draw seekers from around the world. The Cowboy Club understands this magic and complements it perfectly. After a day of hiking Cathedral Rock or exploring the shops of Tlaquepaque, there’s no better way to ground yourself than with a meal that honors the land and its heritage.

This restaurant doesn’t try to compete with Sedona’s natural grandeur. Instead, it celebrates the human stories that unfolded here—the ranchers, the artists, the filmmakers, and the dreamers who made this place what it is today.

Try It. You Won’t Be Sorry.

Whether it’s date night with your partner or a celebration with the entire family, the Cowboy Club delivers an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left Sedona. The combination of exceptional food, rich history, and genuine Western hospitality creates something that can’t be replicated.

So when you’re planning your Sedona adventure, do yourself a favor: make time for the Cowboy Club. Order those cactus fries. Be brave and try the rattlesnake. Sit by the fireplace where legends gathered. Let the wooden walls and Western art transport you to another era.

As for us? We’ll see you there. Because in a town full of incredible restaurants, the Cowboy Club has claimed a permanent place in our hearts—and our travel itinerary.
