Trusting the Universe: Why Surrendering Control Might Be Your Greatest Power Move

Have you ever had a door slam in your face, only to discover later that it kept you from walking into a disaster? Or maybe you didn’t get that job you wanted so badly, and then something even better came along? That’s not coincidence—that’s the universe doing what it does best: conspiring in your favor, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

When Your Plan Meets the Universe’s Plan

We spend so much energy crafting our perfect plans. We map out our careers, relationships, timelines—down to the year we’ll hit each milestone. And then life laughs, throws us a curveball, and suddenly we’re standing in the wreckage of our carefully constructed blueprint, wondering what went wrong.

Here’s what I’ve learned: nothing went wrong. The universe just has a better plan.

Your plan is limited by what you know, what you can see, what you think is possible based on your past experiences. The universe’s plan? It’s written with knowledge of connections you haven’t made yet, opportunities you can’t see coming, and a version of you that you haven’t even met.

What Surrendering Actually Looks Like

Surrendering doesn’t mean becoming passive or giving up on your dreams. It means holding your desires with an open palm instead of a clenched fist.

Here’s how this plays out in real life:

In your career: You apply for your dream position and get rejected. Instead of spiraling into “I’m not good enough,” you surrender the outcome and stay open. Three months later, a former colleague reaches out about a role you didn’t even know existed—one that pays better, aligns more with your values, and offers the flexibility you didn’t know to ask for.

In relationships: You’re devastated when a relationship ends, convinced you’ll never find that connection again. You surrender the timeline of when you’ll meet someone new. Six months later, you’ve rediscovered parts of yourself you’d lost, pursued hobbies that light you up, and naturally attracted someone who loves the whole, authentic version of you—not the diminished one you were becoming.

In daily life: You miss your flight and you’re furious. You surrender the frustration and make peace with the delay. While waiting for the next flight, you strike up a conversation that leads to a business partnership, a lifelong friendship, or simply a perspective shift you desperately needed.

The Signs the Universe Is Guiding You

Divine guidance doesn’t always arrive with trumpets and clear signs. Sometimes it whispers. Here’s what to watch for:

Unexpected obstacles that redirect your path. That rejection, cancellation, or “failure” might be protection in disguise. When doors close despite your best efforts, trust that you’re being guided toward better ones.

Synchronicities and “coincidences.” You think of someone and they text you. You need information and the perfect book falls into your lap. You keep seeing the same message everywhere. Pay attention—the universe is trying to tell you something.

A persistent inner knowing. Beneath the anxiety and overthinking, there’s often a calm voice that knows the truth. That’s your connection to something bigger than yourself.

Things flowing with unexpected ease. When you’re aligned with the universe’s plan, the right things often feel effortless. Doors open. Help appears. Solutions present themselves.

How to Actually Trust When Everything Feels Uncertain

Trusting the universe isn’t about blind faith—it’s a practice. Here’s how to build that muscle:

Release one small outcome every day. Start small. Instead of controlling exactly how your morning goes, surrender to the flow. Stuck in traffic? Trust there’s a reason. Plans cancelled? Trust that you needed that time for something else.

Reframe your “failures.” When something doesn’t work out, ask yourself: “What is this making space for?” or “What am I being protected from?” You don’t need to have the answer immediately. The question alone shifts your perspective.

Create a surrender ritual. Write down what you’re trying to control on paper. Then burn it, tear it up, or bury it as a symbolic act of release. Tell the universe: “I trust you with this.”

Look for evidence in your past. Journal about times when what seemed like the worst thing ended up leading to the best thing. Build a case file for why the universe has your back.

Practice the “What if” flip. When you’re anxious about an outcome, your brain offers worst-case scenarios. Counter it: “What if this works out better than I can imagine?” Both are unknown—choose the thought that empowers you.

Your Invitation to Surrender

Right now, you’re probably gripping onto something. A timeline. An outcome. A specific vision of how things “should” be.

What if you loosened your grip?

What if you trusted that the universe sees the entire board while you can only see your next move?

What if your job isn’t to force and control, but to show up fully, take inspired action, and then surrender the results?

The universe is always working on your behalf, arranging people, circumstances, and opportunities in ways your limited human perspective can’t orchestrate. Your plans are beautiful, but they’re built on what you know. The universe’s plans are built on what’s actually possible for you.

So today, I’m inviting you to surrender. Not to give up, but to give over. To trust. To release your white-knuckled grip on how you think things should unfold and make space for something better than you can imagine.

The universe is conspiring in your favor. It always has been. Maybe it’s time to stop fighting it and start dancing with it instead.

What’s one thing you’re ready to surrender today?
